What's New?

Having gone through the USENET for new developments on the fate of the Newton, I've come across several interesting perspectives which should keep us happy with our new toy. Truth is, there really isn' that much Doom and Gloom, and the Newton still works for us, for the next few years to come...

Apple's hand-held products: Revolution, not evolution
The future of Apple's hand-helds has been full of doom and gloom many
times in the past, and every time, the little computers with some of the best
technology in the palmtop market have come out unscathed. What Rumors
has heard about the "fate" of the MessagePad and eMate, while it will
certainly shake things up if true, is far from a "death."
According to the most reliable information to date (which is to say,
lukewarm at best), the current NewtonOS-based units will be slowly phased
out over the coming months. They will most likely continue to be supported
and developed for through the end of 1998, at the earliest. What will
replace them is the rumored "Allegro Lite," a thin-client version of the next
major upgrade to the Mac OS, this particular version built to run on palmtop
units -- most likely in the eMate form factor. It is not clear whether Allegro
Lite will continue to use the impressively energy-efficient StrongARM
processor, or will move to a PowerPC unit. This will allow Apple to move forward with its OS unification plans,
making more products compatible with each other, and reducing
development costs both at Apple and at Mac OS development firms.Details on exactly how close to the Mac OS 'Allegro Lite' will really be are
still forthcoming, but first reliable word is expected by month's end. No
shipping name or release date have been reliable confirmed for Lite as yet.
